EDEN The Union Series Book 3 eBook Phillip Richards

OK. After three books, I have to say that I am a convert to Mr. Richards. I had almost given up reading male authors because they just don't seem to get relationships, but Richards gets relationships of all kinds, especially those between "mates" in a fighting group. I literally can no longer put down his books. Even more amazing, I accidentally stumbled onto this author, thinking he was the American author by the same name, and am I ever glad I did! Eden captured me from the beginning and I read in trepidation to see if Andy would live or die. He certainly seems to know what he's doing on the fighting front and is hopelessly out of his element on all others. I don't know why I find this so attractive, but this story had me almost not breathing as I raced to find out what happens next. And for the third time, I have ordered the next book in the series and will start it right away. Part of me wants Andy's torture to end and part of me will be sad if there are no more books about this amazing character.

EDEN The Union Series Book 3 eBook Phillip Richards Reviews

I'm enjoying this series and plan to continue with the next. That said, I felt that the 2nd story, "Lancejack," was the best so far. "Eden" was good, but it seemed to move slower for awhile with more introspection by our main character, though it's easy to see why from all he's been through. There were also a lot of missing/misused words in my version that should have been caught by a good editor.

On the plus side, Richards is able to portray the confusion and horror of war much better than most. I also really liked the character of Yulia and hope to see more of her in the next installment, and I'm also hoping to see ole Woody finally gets what's coming to him!

I like the continuing saga of Andy and like I said, I do plan to purchase the next in the series because I'm too caught up in the characters to quit now. Well played, Mr. Richards, well played.

Synopsis
This is the third book of the Union Series. It follows the tale of Lance Corporal Andy Moralee in the Union Army’s Dropship Infantry. He has survived basic training and two deployments on the hostile world of New Earth. He has emerged as a leader in the army’s eyes. However, the horrors of war have left him scared. He is now trained for reconnaissance and has been deployed to the planet Eden.

Eden was a beautiful planet that where humanity had hoped to create a paradise where they could live in peace. Paradise never came. The air of the planet could be deadly if breathed too long. Colonial rivalries left people loyal to no faction, doing what the needed to survive. One rogue province has invaded the other, and the Union has to step in before the conflict draw’s in its rivals and the situation spirals out of control.

Andy Moralee takes his section in and is soon sucked into the conflict, where humanity has sunk to a new low. Loyalist forces are exterminating civilians in the forest. The Presidential Guard of Edo is prepared to kill the survivors, accusing them of treason for not resisting. Lancejack Moralee now has two enemies to keep an eye on, and he doesn’t know which side is worse. The Union has sided with Edo and neither trusts the other.

Andy Moralee finds himself walking a tightrope between following orders that could keep the war from spreading and separating himself from the evil he witnesses.

Review
Phillip Richard draws from his experience as a soldier in the British Army to weave a tale relevant to the world of today. There are no strange, alien creatures to battle humanity. The enemy is very familiar. Earth is still split into warring factions that act out their rivalries on colony worlds. The soldiers have a large number of weapons to draw on, both high tech and brutally basic.
Eden continues the story of Andy. After the events of Lancejack he gets some special training then is sent to Eden.
This is a much darker tale than CROW or Lancejack. The character development that occurred previously starts to evolve into a haunting of of Andy's spirit. But in this new leadership role he has to continue on and confront these demons by him self in his own head if he is going to keep his fire team alive.

For the story I thought Lancejack had a better pacing, this book felt like it was drawn out in sections to pad some length, but I can't complain that it wasn't a good read. If you are reading this review before you read the book, I would warn you not to read the authors note at the end of the book, as it starts to spoil some of the surprises of the next book in the series.
Be prepared for a darker, view on humanity when you have finished this one.
I really hate to give the author a big head, but his writing seems to improve with each rendering of the Union Series. As I mentioned in a review of book two Lancejack Mr Richards book was free and was written well and had plenty of action. This was what compelled me to turn loose of the few bucks it cost for the rest of the series. Not to spoil the story but Andy the main character in this story does some heavy duty soul searching in book three "Eden" and may have a love interest waiting in the wings. I have enjoyed following this story and love seeing the improvement in Mr. Richards skills. He even got away from the over use "tens of" which was a bit annoying to me ( I abhor repetitiveness in a story) as well as other blips in his delivery. This author can run with the big dogs if he can keep producing novels like this series. I am off to book four " REECE" to see if he can keep it up. ( His books are really inexpensive right now so if you want a good read you best buy now before he realizes he can get a lot more for his books than he is charging)
