The Smuggler Gambit Adam Fletcher Adventure Series Book 1 eBook Sara Whitford

A very good coming-of-age adventure story in which young Adam Fletcher finds himself apprenticed to one master and becoming entangled in the machinations of an evil competitor. It was well written, nicely paced, and peopled with likable characters. It was a little predictable and the language was a little too modern for the time period, but I thoroughly enjoyed it all the same. I would easily recommend it not only for YA but anybody who likes good, clean stories that are full of adventure and that have a positive outlook on life that shine through the words.

The Smuggler Gambit Adam Fletcher Adventure Series Book 1 eBook Sara Whitford Reviews

The colonies. My favorite era. I picked this book up solely on that fact alone but I am glad I did.

This is the first in a planned series by a first time author and I was a little worried heading into the story. The initial set up is good, with many wonderful characters and a wealth of knowledge on the era. The author really has done her homework with this novel and it clearly shows. She udnerstands the places, names, business aspects and all the little details that make you become more immersed in the story.

I will admit that I struggled in a few spots in the first third of the book, I thought some of the main character's actions felt a little off. Could they be marked up to a young man's eagerness and foolhardy thinking? Possibily and it did not bother me enough to stop reading. After that the tale really takes off. Things happen quickly and make sense for the story. The author does a fine job tying up loose ends and bringing the hectic moments of the tale to a meaningful and well-written close.

If you are looking for a young adventure story, or a story in colonial America, this would be the book to read!
The Smuggler's Gambit is a very good read. The author brings life to young Adam Fletcher and the other central characters involved. It was actually a problem putting the book down. You are drawn into the challenges facing young Mr. Fletcher and things happen rather quickly from several different angles so you want to stay with it. I was very surprised that I was drawn so quickly into a book dealing with the 1700's prior to the Revolutionary War.

As a foot note, when I finished the book I immediately ordered the next book in the series. I completed it quickly, but I will save that information for another review.
this was a well written novel about shipping and smuggling and some piracy with historical details added. I think it was more geared toward teenagers or young adults. Having said that, I did enjoy the book
If you like fast paced action and feats of derring-do, this may not be a good book for you. However, if you enjoy a nice story with likable characters, be sure to pick up this one. When shippers in colonial North Carolina feel restraint under King George’s abhorrent taxes, smuggling and piracy provide a suitable solution. When shippers resort to scheming to discredit competitors, the fur begins to fly. The unlikely hero in this venture is an unwilling apprentice who quickly adapts to his new duties and co-workers. What he learns about the smuggling is outside the realm of his apprenticeship but he handles himself well and survives an attempted murder. A short, pleasant time is spent reading this one.

This first book of the Adam Fletcher Adventures I picked from a list because I like the word Gambit. Those who play chess know the importance of planning one's moves (Gambit) before playing and changing it to your advantages to produce the result desired, that being to win the game.

In Smuggler's Gambit, Adam is a young man full piss and vinegar, seventeen, who gets in trouble with the law defending his mother's honor. Forced into an apprenticeship, he becomes a pawn in a game he is too young to understand, smuggling.

A criminal minded man, who makes the first move, using his popularity posture, leads Adam into a deadly game of life. His ward is a respectable smuggler, considering the historical period before the American Revolution when the King's subjects disliked his taxes in which the story evolves.

Adam's resolves his confusion between the two men and makes an unorthodox move that gives the upper hand to the criminals. Through ingenuity, Adam's near-death experience after a happenstance with those undesirables is his last adventurous move that gives him and his new family a checkmate.

The game was played well by Adam with little experience in such matters. The Smuggler's Gambit is a must read to start the series.
This book is so real as I read it I was so hooked that I could not stop reading until my old eyes could no longer focus. I got the edition the next day and finished it before I went to bed.I live in Eastern North Carolina near New Bern and History and Genealogy intrigue me. I know this is just a fiction but the History is so detailed. I cannot wait until the next edition comes out.
I enjoyed this book and read it straight through. The characters are people I wanted to hang out with. Living in NC I seriously enjoyed the historical and local references. I gave the novel 3 stars because I wanted much more immersion into the period, the locale, and the people. I was left feeling I'd just skimmed through the territory as if it were simply set-dressing and not a living, breathing environment. The story seemed light to me, though entertaining. More like a YA novel or a Disney movie or TV show of the 50's & 60's e.g. Swamp Fox.. I would give this 4 stars for YA. I am considering reading the 2nd novel, based on liking young Adam Fletcher and the setting, but haven't definitely decided yet. I would recommend this for a good, light, entertaining read set in a time and place not commonly written about, and written by an author who clearly loves(and knows) her subject and her setting.
