First let me say that I really, really enjoyed the first two books in this series. However, I really couldn't stand this book and I tried more than once. I love the world building in the Iron Seas series but the story and the characters in this book were just BORING!Maybe the problem was that the author was trying to make a moral point in this book. I least I thinks she was. I'm still a little unclear on what it was though. If the moral was just that people have the right to love whoever they want and should have the freedom to do that I'm good with that but that wasn't what I took from this book. In this book her characters live in a secret society of lesbians and what to keep this a secret at all costs (and when I say all costs that means if you have to kill someone to keep your secret that's okay). The problem is I'm not sure why it was such a big deal to keep it a secret. There was only one character who had a problem with lesbians and even then it was just a verbal tirade. I never believed or saw any evidence that the villagers would be in danger if their way of life became known. So I had a hard time buying into the protect the village at all costs. On top of that, apparently it's only there village that needs to be protected since the heroines sister let another village of lesbians be killed in order to protect her own village without even trying to warn them, protect them or stop the villain.
The villain was one dimensional and well also boring. In fact I would say that the real villain was the heroine's sister who felt no guilt or shame about letting an entire village of innocent women be killed.
The romance was also boring. It had no heat or really anything interesting. None of the drama or fun of the first two books. In fact it was like two fumbling teens. I didn't care about either character or whether they ended up together or not.
I'm sad to say I really didn't like this book and I'd recommend skipping it all together.

"People never believed of others what they couldn't imagine of themselves."
THE STORY Annika Fridasdotter is from an Icelandic village where only women live. When her sister is exiled because of an action that Annika took but her sister took the blame, Annika decides to find her sister and return her to their home. For four years Annika has been traveling around the New World searching. On one journey, she meets David Kentewess a scientist who is searching for his mother's origins in order to fulfill her last request. David was severely injured as a child and now has mechanical legs, an arm and an eye. As a result, he has been discriminated against and doesn't really believe that he will ever find a woman for him. Their adventure leads them through the wilds of Iceland and into the hands of a mad man who may kill them all.
OPINION I liked the action adventure story, but I felt this book was more disconnected from the world that Singh has created in her other books in the series. To me, it seemed a pale imitation of the other two books in the series. I also liked Annika and David, but didn't feel the deep connection between them that existed between prior couples. Their conflicts seemed more external than internal. They quickly resolve their internal conflicts and seem only to be waiting for Annika to realize that she is in love. Parts of the novel were so beautifully written -- especially the climatic rescue scene -- but as a whole I didn't find it as compelling a story as prior novels.
WORTH MENTIONING For a book that some claim is about exploring sexuality because Annika is open to falling in love with either a man or a woman, I didn't find the book really involved in that discussion at all. She is not exploring her sexuality when readers meet her except for being interested in David.
FINAL DECISION This story was good, but no where near as good as the first two books in the series. The adventures were interesting but I didn't like the romance as much.
CONNECTED BOOKS RIVETED is the third book in the Iron Seas series. It can be read as a standalone.
STAR RATING I give this book 4 stars.
I read very little Steampunk, but when I do read in this genre, it is usually Meljean Brook. Her world building is excellent. The characters in this story are completely new to the series. I admit to some trepidation, as I very much enjoyed books one and two, and would have liked to see more of those characters. My concern was unfounded. I enjoyed these characters and this story thoroughly. The story itself, while set in an alternative reality, is absolutely applicable to today. The themes of tolerance and how heterosexuals might become allies to those with different sexual orientations (or for that matter any in a privileged group can be allies to the discriminated against or underprivileged) really resonated with me. The romance is also solid and satisfying. I'm still catching up on this series and I very much look forward to reading additional installments.
I save up the Iron Seas stories for when I really need something excellent to read, because they haven't let me down yet. Here we are on #3 and still going strong. This was my first to listen to on audio, and I loved Alison Larkin's voice. I kind of laughed at first when I heard her read Annika's part- it sounds exactly like Bjork! But hey, she's a unique Icelandic woman too, so it fits, they even have equally crazy sartorial taste. These books have adventure, fantasy, romance, and great characters. I loved the LBGT rights angle, the secret village of women, and all the Icelandic settings. And as always, the steampunk vehicles and the prosthetics are so interesting and add so much to the world-building. So good.
The only thing I hate is the cover art. Annika looks white! In the book it's pretty clear she is dark-skinned with very curly hair, probably of African origin. David is also possibly mixed race, his father was "Native" and his mother was probably white? Also, Annika's clothing is super bright and she even wears a ruff. So the cover is kind of generic steampunk, I wish it were more accurate to the characters.
