If this is your first Patrick Lee novel, you can be sure it will not be your last. Get ready to be hooked. I love all of Lee's books, can't wait for him to write more. Every book has a unique concept and plot line. An original writer is hard to find nowadays - I feel as if I keep reading the same 5 books over and over again where only the names and places have been changed. If you like originality, sci-fi, high tech, tense action and suspense with lots of unpredictable twists and turns thrown in, you will love this and all his books. There's a reason he won the Goodreads Choice Award for Best Science Fiction. Although this book can be read as a satisfying "stand-alone", Lee manages to weave complex ideas and subplots that all come together in the final of the trilogy in an explosive conclusion without losing the reader along the way. Highly recommended!

The Breach Patrick Lee 9780061584459 Books Reviews

I thoroughly enjoyed 99% of this story. The plot was intricate, intelligent, and well-developed. Most of the key characters were well drawn. The writing was professional. I would recommend this novel to any lover of techno/scifi-thrillers, but I would also tell them to not expect a satisfying ending. 5-stars for the first 99% of the story, but less than 1-star for the ending.

I think the nature of the plot, with the interesting twist which takes place about 75% into the story, made the ending difficult to write, forcing it to be a Catch-22 predicament blended with a science fiction déjà vu. It was not a satisfying end for me because it did not match the satisfaction and enjoyment I received from the first 99% of the story. Maybe there was no better ending to be had. Maybe the author painted the story into a corner and there was no other way out. Maybe... but I will never know.

Unlike some other reviewers, the ending did not make me feel the need to rush out and read the second novel in the series in order to get a more satisfying conclusion. I thought this novel was a complete story in itself. In fact, I was surprised that there would be a second Travis Chase novel because I didn't think he was that strong of a character to carry a trilogy series. Maybe he gets stronger in the next volume.

But, without a doubt, the first 99% of this story is well worth the read.

PS I thought there was an uncanny similarity of this story's opening to the opening of Dean Koontz's Watchers. In Watchers, the MC (Travis Cornell) leaves his home for a hike in the woods to reflect upon his life. In The Breach, the MC (Travis Chase) leaves his home for a hike in the mountains to reflect upon his life. In Watchers, while on his hike in the woods, the MC encounters a strange, high-tech dog (Einstein, the wonder-dog). In The Breach, while on his hike in the mountains, the MC discovers the crash of a strange airplane with a high-tech object on it (Whisper, the wonder-sphere). There are many other similarities between the two novels. It would not surprise me if Watchers was one of Patrick Lee's favorite stories.
The Breach is a unique science fiction thriller. Although it's not sci-fi in the traditional sense, it's more steeped in scientific principles more than it is aliens or the future. I purchased the title on my because of the stellar reviews it had received. This usually isn't what drives me to purchase a book, but The Breach lived up to ever positive thing I read about it.

The plot of this novel is quite complex and neatly woven with reveals coming at all the right times. This keeps the pace of the story just right. The Breach is an action thriller at it's core, but Patrick Lee expresses his intelligent (or very thorough research) with all the scientific information he uses as the backbone of the adventure.

The two main characters are carefully exposed. Travis Chase in particular as his past is unraveled through detailed flashbacks. He's flawed, but driven to do what's right despite his inner conflicts. He is also an analytical mind that has much to offer people whose intelligence far exceeds his own. This gives him value in a shadowy agency that have some of the most intelligent minds in the world. Paige Campbell is the female lead, and she exhibits the right amount of strength and vulnerability. She's a woman who is very smart and well trained.

Lee doesn't waste words or descriptions either. Everything moves as it should with no unnecessary padding. People always says "I couldn't put it down." For me, I don't throw this term out liberally. There are a handful of books that "I couldn't put down" and The Breach is definitely one of them.

I realize I'm a little late to the party. The Breach was released back in 2009 and Lee has released two more books in this series, Ghost Country and Deep Sky, but that's what is great about books. They are forever and it doesn't matter when you find them, they are timeless. Especially when they come in a series. If you jump on a series late, you are now able to read most or all of the titles without having to wait years for the next book (which I plan to do with these titles). For something thrilling and very unique, The Breach is what you're looking for.
