First of all, the author does not give names to his characters, and it is a little off-putting and out of the norm. However, after a bit, I got used to it and actually liked it as I didn't have to remember specific names and as the main character is always on the run, it is humorous how he comes up with what he calls the other characters. In fact it helps me to picture the different characters. You learn quickly in zombie stories, don't get too attached to characters, as death is a constant. I quickly finished this installment and went through all the others in a little over a weekend and am anxiously awaiting September.Tags : Amazon.com: Anno Zombus: Year 1; January (Anno Zombus- Year 1) eBook: Dave Rowlands: Kindle Store, ebook,Dave Rowlands,Anno Zombus: Year 1; January (Anno Zombus- Year 1),Fiction Horror,Fiction Black Humor
Anno Zombus Year 1; January Anno Zombus Year 1 eBook Dave Rowlands Reviews
I like the characters but have learned not to get too attached. Am enjoying Zombies in another country. I in the process of reading all of the months.
I have really enjoyed the way these books are written. I would recommend them to everyone. Just hate that I am catching up with the latest book!!
I actually enjoyed the way this author approached the zombie apocalypse by writing this story in journal format. If taken as a stand alone book, it would be dis appointing but I like that it is written from the point of view of a survivor who is not a professional writer. Granted, naming people by their character traits, i.e. Apocalypse Girl, might bother some readers, you get used to it quickly.
In this journal, something happens every day so it never gets boring and the story expands over time. Take January as an introduction to the series. I have read through March (at this time) and I'm hooked and looking forward to more and I think that the writing gets slightly better with each month.
So far this series is very good and fast moving. Liking the characters and the storytelling. I would at this point recommend
Interesting little zombie series. I like the diary format and surprisingly used to the way they have no formal names but a descriptive name for the characters. At first I didn't like it but it grew on me. I'm now reading February and hope that it continues the interest that it started in January.
I finished this book a couple days ago and mostly enjoyed it.The setting is a typical post-apocalyptic zombie world in which the usual suspects are included
- The ever present threat of zombie attacks.
- The dilemma of teaming up with other survivors or staying away from them.
- The search for food and utilities.
These are pretty standard by now and I feel the author covers them well enough without overdoing it. I particularly liked the inclusion of a hippie group in the violent chaos of the apocalypse. A funny and welcome change of setting.
The story progresses in a more or less linear fashion and is sometimes a bit predictable in a certain regard but this is dictated more by the genre than anything else. So I didn't mind that much. On the other hand, near the end of the book, it takes an interesting turn that sets up a turn of events I haven't read in the genre before. I won't give any spoilers but it has to do with how governments reacted to the initial outbreak in big cities. I'm sure this will influence the rest of the series tremendously and it's an interesting and original twist.
Some issues worth mentioning
- The book is written in journal style, usually with relatively short entries. That might turn off some people but I didn't mind; it keeps the writing style informal and makes for easy reading.
- The downside of that informality is that the consistency needs to be there all the time and I found that lacking in certain dialogues. As in, who speaks that way in real life? Not a big problem, just something I found should have been caught during the editing process.
- The author doesn't use names for his characters, only nicknames. Some readers might not enjoy this, though I got used to it very quickly.
- Perhaps it's just me but there were some elements I felt were too similar to The Walking Dead TV-series. That pulled me out of the book and into the TV series, which hurts the reading experience a bit.
Those issues are why I didn't give 5 stars.
Overall, a good start of an interesting new series set in a zombie-universe. I look forward to reading the following installments and hope they will be just as much fun to read as this one.
A good, solid chunk of zombie flesh written in diary form by our narrator. I especially liked the use of nicknames, rather than real names for his friends. Apocalypse Girl, The Twin, etc, were all very well-written, as was our main character. I look forward to reading the rest of the series.
