The Fix Arje Shaw Books
I gave this book two stars because I finished it. Frankly it was a awful. With the exception of Max and "The Kid," the characters were hateful. For the most part I am very squeamish and hate violence; however, I enjoyed the part where Ollie and his son took a baseball bat and beat Eddie, breaking his legs. There was a lot of homo-erotic interaction between Eddie and some of the low life people he associated with, not to mention bowel and gas issues. This book was so bad I could almost smell the gas. The pace of the story was like a toddler trying to dribble a basketball across the court. I purchased "The Fix" after reading "The Bookie's Son," by Andrew Goldstein, which I thoroughly enjoyed. "The Fix" doesn't come close to Mr. Goldstein's novel. From the other reviews obviously some people enjoyed Mr. Shaw's novel, it just didn't do anything for me.Tags : Amazon.com: The Fix (9780578074580): Arje Shaw: Books,Arje Shaw,The Fix,Library Tales Publishing,0578074583,9780578074580ING,Action & Adventure,Crime,FICTION Action & Adventure,Fiction - General,Fiction : Crime,FictionCrime,Modern & contemporary fiction (post c 1945)
The Fix Arje Shaw Books Reviews
THE FIX is a wry, poignant, and endlessly entertaining novel. Arje Shaw's dialogue sings and brings the entire story to life. His observations are alternately hilarious and touching, and his voice is uniquely his own. I loved this.
One of the most exciting, clever and raw novels I've ever read. It's begging to be a movie. Shaw is a very honest writer and he takes big chances. His lead character is so nuanced that he truly comes to life in your mind. Compelling from the first to the last page... enough landscapes, time periods & perspectives to keep anyone happy.
Mr. Shaw's novel reads like a play with snappy dialogue and plenty of grit. The story moves along and keeps me interested. I look for opportunities to get back to it every chance I get and feel satisfied even when I only find time for part of a chapter. The voices of the characters sound so authentic and feel real and raunchy. These characters seem alive and the story sounds as if it is based on real experiences.
I just finished The Fix and I LOVED it. So wonderful from so many points of view. The consistent voice and style the author uses which really makes things come from inside the characters and elucidates who they are, the amazing bits of philosophy (I actually dog-eared quite a few pages for the quotes) the knowledge of history and politics and so many facts that are pertinent to the story, and the undercurrent of how writing and art figure deeply in the healing process, all make for a rich and moving reading experience. A totally original story written by someone who I can only assume has vast experience of the subject, but recreated, embellished and reinvented as a brilliant piece of fiction. I can't recommend it highly enough. I couldn't put it down. I really just could not get into this book. I did try and maybe I'll go back to it again. Some books take a few chapters before they engross you in the plot and characters.
Terific book
This book combines accurate historical references to the Jewish community and Lower Eastside of Manhattan in the 50's and 60's with an exciting hoodlum, hustler action story. It captures the essence of immigrant life and of one particular family and their dynamics, especially fathers and sons. There is humor, poignancy and surprises. It would make a spectacular movie because the characters and action are so visual, perhaps because of Arje Shaw's playwriting experience. It deftly explains the expressions used that vividly portray the dialogue and activities of the era.
I would strongly recommend this for a poignant and exciting read.
